Thursday 26th February 2015 – travel – cloudy and rain

We set off for the shuttle around 6.15 and the journey was actually very easy but it is hard at that time of night! We were exhausted before we set out!! Also forgot to top up for Dartford crossing but because we got to the shuttle an hour early we went on line with their free wifi and made an account and put £10 on, which will pay for our return and 2 more! Crossed with no hassles and parked up at Escalles just after midnight French time. Phew – straight to bed

Friday 27th February – travel and walk (Cap Blanc Nez, Somme viewing point, Poses)**** sunny

We had a looooong lie in. Read for a bit and took our time getting ready. It is a gloriously sunny day and when I got out there was a paraglider up above us flying the cliffs behind us. Didn’t get very far when we left our car park. Drove into the village, about half a mile and couldn’t resist going for a walk on the cliffs at the Cap Blanc Nez. As we entered the road to the car park you could see the white cliffs of Dover so clearly you felt you could touch them! It was a really wonderful walk with the sunshine and the colourful paragliders to watch and a low tide making it look like a proper surfy beach :) Beautiful place and so close to Calais! Eventually set off about 12.30 and drove on the Toll road (8 euros this time – it is quite often different every time we come!) unusual for us but this particular section misses out lots of roundabouts and traffic lights so it is worth it! We stopped for lunch at the aire which has the panoramic views of the Somme. It is a lovely place with lots of water, reeds, fish and ducks as well as the tower which you climb for the view (74 steps!). Back in the van and drove to Poses near Rouen where we stayed and biked in the autumn. It is on the River Seine and has a barrage and a lock on the other side. We had a cuppa and some pastries we rescued from the freezer at home – been in there ages! Then walked over the barrage bridge and for a considerable way along the river bank on the other side. Walked back through the village of Amfreville sous les Monts – it is under a huge chalky hill. Back to the van for a quick read before a salmon, potatoes, peas and carrots tea. Mag cooked the potatoes at home to use up the bag and the salmon came from lidl yesterday – on offer with garlic and parsley butter. Don’t think fish and garlic are a match made in heaven but it was ok. We are definitely back in the swing of van life – we love it:)

Saturday 28th February – Travel and short walk – cloudy with sunny periods later

We left our little spot on the river at Poses after a lie in and travelled down towards Orleans – our usual route. We stopped at Gien for our lunch in a very wild spot across the river from the town. Didn’t stop at Briare this time but kept going to Nevers where we had seen a signpost to the Bec d’Allier last time we were here. We couldn’t find it then but managed it this time. We were unsure what it was but the signs showed the river and canal so knew we would like it! It turned out to be a small village where the rivers Allier and Loire meet and there was also an aquaduct taking the canal over the Allier. We had a good walk at both the village and the aquaduct and wished we had our bikes as it looked intriguing to cycle into Nevers. We stopped for the night on the canal bank with two other campers in the village of Cuffy, just underneath the lock which takes the boats down from the aquaduct.
